Here is a list of state run student loan providers and a collection of small and relatively unknown scholarship providers especially for disabled or chronically ill students. Please note that not all providers are named below. Large and well known scholarship providers that are open to all students are not listed here. You can easily inform yourself about these scholarships on the sites of the student’s service center, the Deutsche Studentenwerk or Stipendienlotse. Apart from these there are a number of specialized foundations at the Johannes-Gutenberg University. For more information please visit the university's official website.

The organizations are responsible for financial decisions. The Office of Accessibility cannot give further information than those listed.

BAföG

The „Förderungsabteilung“ (department of financial aid) of the JGU is responsible for the BAföG applications. The Service Center is located in the Bonifazius-Tower A (Rhabanusstr. 3, Mainz).

This foundation gives stipends to people who have been the target of discrimination. Mainly due to heritage but also due to disability. It is only granted, if your degree (Bachelor / Master) is endangered due to financial need. It is granted for a maximum of 4 semesters and only to those who have shown determination in their studies and have achieved good grades. This financial support is known as "Abschlusshilfe" as it is meant to help you graduate.

This foundation is aimed at people with physical or mental disabilities and to a lesser degree, those in financial distress due to external reasons. Applying is always possible. There is no permanent funding, but rather a financial aid for special needs (e.g. clothes made from natural fibres for someone with neurodermatitis).

As the name states, this is for student who are HIV-positive. Applications can be submitted throughout the year. The application form can be found on their homepage.
It is not a permanent funding, rather funds are given for specific purposes and differ due to each individuals financial and personal situation. Also it is a post-ranked fund, which means that financial aid is only given, if  governmental agencies or health care provider have already declined payment.

This foundation is for people with Poliomyelitis or Multiple Sclerosis. Applications can be submitted at any time. The application form can be downloaded on their homepage. Along with it a certification of disability, a verification of illness and a verification of income have to be submitted. This foundation doesn't give out long term stipends but rather one time financial aid for certain specific needs. The prerequisit is that despite financial need neither state agencies nor health insurance will pay.

This foundation is for people who could previously walk but now need a wheelchair permanently due to an accident or illness. This foundation doesn't give out long term stipends but rather one time financial aid for certain specific needs (e.g. remodeling your home for wheelchair accessibility, adapting your car to suit your needs). The prerequisit is that despite financial need neither state agencies nor health insurance will pay.
The application form can be downloaded on their homepage and can be submitted at all times. Along with it a certification of disability, a verification that you really are dependent on a wheelchair, a verification of income and an estimation of the costs must be submitted.

This foundation is for people with Multiple Sclerosis. They work closely togethter with the DMSG (German Multiple Sclerosis Association). This foundation doesn't give out long term stipends but rather one time financial aid for certain specific needs (e.g. health aids). The prerequisit is that despite financial need neither state agencies nor health insurance will pay.

This foundation is for people with Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. This stipend is for all kinds of further education or training. The stipend is only given out for the duration of one year and only for specific enterprise (e.g. revision course, internships, trade master). This stipend is not for covering the costs of living and maxes out at 10.000,- €.
Applicants must be between 18 (in exceptional cases 16) to 35 years old. Applications can only be submitted once a year, the deadline is April 30th. The application form can be downloaded on their homepage and along with it an informal letter describing your motivation, a short projekt outline, a tabular CV and a doctors certification of the disease must be submitted.

This foundation isn't bound to the region of Köln (Cologne), rather it funds studies throughout Germany at Universities and Universities of Applied Sciences with state qualified degrees.
Funding is dependent on your overall income (other stipends must be declared) und maxes out at 3.500,-€. The age limit is 30.
Prerequisite for funding are good grades therefore only students from the 3. Semester on can apply. Special burdens due to disability or illness can (and should) be disclosed as they will be taken into consideration.
You can apply twice yearly during February and August. Outside these timeframes no applications are accepted.
The documents in support of your application are extensive. Please visit their homepage to download the checklist for applications. Whoever makes the shortlist will be invited to the "Bewerbertage" (applicant days) in Cologne.

This foundation is for all those in financial need through no fault of their own but due to accidents or cruel stroke of fate. This may apply to students with disabilities or chronic illnesses. Indeed most examples of recipients on their homepage have some kind of background with illness or disability.
Applications can be submitted throughout the year. Apart from being in financial need further prerequisites are that this need cannot be resolved through personal efforts, that financial aid from another third party can't be expected and that the financial aid by the foundation will actually help alleviate the need.

There is a special fund by the President of the Federal Republic of Germany which can give a one time small monetary aid. Prerequisite is an acute financial need along with a severe illness or disability.

This foundation gives stipends for internships in foreign countries, language courses in foreign countries, Work-and-Travel and student exchanges. It fund people of all ages for educational or work related goals in foreign countries, but not just ordinary, run off the mill goals everyone else is after, rather "different" goals.
